Salmon Season!
Well, I’m pretty sleepy because we are starting to grind pretty good—it seems the fish never sleep, so we don’t get much either. The sockeye run is starting to show up in Cook Inlet, and the crew (Indigo and Ursula) and captain are starting to get a bit more dialed. We’ve been having a blast really, with good weather, decent fishing, and delicious salmon dinners cooked on the diesel stove. Crew should have a bowline, trucker’s hitch and clove hitch mastered by now, they are a bit more used to me yelling “tie it off!!!!!,” and they have taken on social media duties as well :). Captain is still trying to get a handle on the crazy tidal currents in Cook Inlet that are moving the fish (and us) around.
We’ll be leaving at around 3 am this morning (evening?) to flood up the inlet for a 7 am opener. The fish have been trickling in in a kind of dramatic way, so you can make set after set without getting much, but then get a few nice hits that make the day. The peak of the run should be in a couple weeks, and we’ll be heading north to fish out of the Kasiloff River then, but in the meantime we are in and out of Homer, brining fresh silver-bright beauties into town twice a week.
You can generally find us on the docks on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10-12, slinging yesterday’s catch from the boat in the Homer Harbor (ramp 8—check Facebook to make sure we will be there), then we are back to the shop to process the rest for folks—fillets, headed & gutted etc. We are still making lox, smoking, and are pretty darn close to being legal on salmon caviar—very exciting!!! Oh yes, we found a bit of time to make a few fish prints. The image for this blog posts is my favorite.
If you’d like to order a box of fish, caviar, or smoked product, now is a good time to get on the list. Shoot an email and we’ll get you squared away.
